Highlights painted as pure white spots

“My highlights look like disconnected white stickers stuck onto the objects.”

Faulty. Corrected.
Diagram of this kind of fault, not a photograph.

What is happening

Highlights appear as harsh white chalk marks plastered across fruit, vases, or forms. Instead of describing shiny curved surfaces, they detach and float in front of the object.

Few real highlights are pure titanium white. A true specular highlight reflects the ambient light source and takes on subtle tints of both the light and the local colour, while fading into a softer transition zone.

The 30-second test

Take a photo of your still life in black-and-white on your phone and compare the value of the highlight against the actual values around it.

How to fix it

  1. Mix a tint combining pure white with a small touch of your light source colour and the local colour.
  2. Softly scumble this muted tint over the stark white dot to tie it to the surface.
  3. Place only a microscopic dot of crisp light at the absolute center of brightest reflection.
  4. Feather the immediate edges of the highlight outward slightly into the mid-tone.

Can it be saved? Rescue

Glaze lightly over the white spots with the local hue, then reinstate a much smaller, warmer highlight.

Drill: Sphere highlight progression

About 20 minutes. You need:

  • Acrylic paper
  • Red acrylic
  • Yellow ochre
  • White

Paint a red sphere. Test highlights ranging from stark pure white to a warm peach-tinted white with softened halo edges to evaluate form integration.
