Streaky flat areas that should be uniform

“My background sky looks streaky and uneven instead of smooth and flat.”

Faulty. patchy horizontal bands with dried brush trailsCorrected. solid uninterrupted flat wash
Diagram of this kind of fault, not a photograph.

What is happening

A flat wash shows uneven brush lines, light bands, and patchy density. The colour appears inconsistent across what should be a solid backdrop.

The paint mix was either mixed unevenly with water, applied with an undersized brush, or allowed to dry along an edge before the next stroke met it.

The 30-second test

Stand two paces back from your work under good light and squint to check if the background reads as a uniform tone.

How to fix it

  1. Mix a generous puddle of colour to the consistency of single cream on your palette.
  2. Switch to a wide, soft flat brush rather than a small round brush.
  3. Work quickly across the area, overlapping each stroke slightly while the edge is still wet.
  4. Do not touch or correct drying paint until the entire passage has dried.

Can it be saved? Rescue

Mix a large batch of fresh opaque paint and lay down one continuous, swift wash across the dried streaks.

Drill: Flat background wash

About 20 minutes. You need:

  • Watercolour paper
  • Large flat wash brush
  • Gouache
  • Palette well

Prepare a uniform puddle of gouache. Fill a six-inch square in horizontal overlapping bands without lifting your working bead.
