Cast shadows painted black and opaque

“The cast shadows under my fruit look like heavy black holes drilled into the table.”

Faulty. opaque tube black painted heavily under objectCorrected. luminous transparent glaze using ambient table hue plus complementary darks

What is happening

The shadows cast by objects appear dead, opaque, and jet-black. Instead of looking like a tabletop veiled in dim light, they appear like solid physical obstacles painted with tar.

A cast shadow is not an absence of light filled with black pigment; it is an area illuminated by ambient light sources and local surface colour. Filling it with opaque carbon black destroys transparency and cancels the underlying texture of the surface.

The 30-second test

Place a scrap of pure black paper next to your cast shadow: is your painted shadow identical to the black paper with zero transparency or colour temperature?

How to fix it

  1. Wipe away the heavy black paint with an odorless mineral spirit rag.
  2. Mix the actual colour of the tabletop, then shift it one step darker and slightly richer in local tone.
  3. Add a transparent dark complementary tone (such as ultramarine blue mixed with burnt sienna) rather than pure tube black.
  4. Apply the mix as a thin, semi-transparent veil, keeping the edge crisp near the object and softer further away.

Can it be saved? Rescue

Scrape off the opaque black or wait until dry, then glaze a rich, transparent dark that reflects the local tabletop colour over the area.

Drill: Transparent Cast Shadow Study

About 20 minutes. You need:

  • primed canvas pad
  • ultramarine blue
  • burnt sienna
  • yellow ochre
  • titanium white

Paint a plain yellow tabletop. Place a simple wooden block on it. Mix the tabletop cast shadow using yellow ochre thinned with burnt sienna and ultramarine, creating a luminous, transparent dark where the wood grain remains visible.
